MMORPG TERMINOLOGY

ADD - Akashic Digital Disk. The method of high capacity storage used by most software publishers. It was developed by Meridian Systems and can hold up to a hundred tetrabytes of information.

Alt - A Player's character kept on the same account which is not the Player's main character. It is usually used to store items when the Player's main runs out of room in his/her pack.

AoE - Area of Effect Damage. This is a spell or some other attack which damages many opponents within a certain range.

AFK - Away from Keyboard. This means the Player is away from the computer.

Aggro - Happens when a monster or hostile NPC targets a Player Character to attack it.

Astral Net - An interconnected system of networks that connects computers around the world via the Delphian protocol.

Avatar - A Player's in-game character model. Buff - A beneficial spell or status change placed upon a character.

DMG - Damage

DOT - Damage over time

DPS - Damage per second

De-Buff - A spell or status ailment that cancel's a player's Buffs.

Gank - When a player attacks another player while he/she is busy fighting a monster. This activity is looked down upon.

GM - Game Moderator. A GM is an employee of Meridian systems who is inside the game world to help solve player issues.

Grinding - A term used to describe the tedius leveling up of one's character by staying in one area and attacking the same monster over and over in order to gain Crowns and XP.

HP - Hit points/Health

IM - Instant Message. A way to contact other players in-game by using a seperate chat/voice window.

Kill Steal - To kill a near-death enemy monster/NPC that another player has been attacking, thus "stealing the kill" and gaining the XP, gold, and drops that the other player has been working for.

LFG - Looking for group.

Log - to log off or disconnect from the game.

LOL - Laughing Out Loud.

LOOT - Treasure recieved from a monster or chest.

MMO - Massively Multiplayer Online.

Nerf - A term used to describe something that has been down-graded or made weaker by the developers. They usually do this because of balance issues, or whenever enough players of one Profession complain about another.

Newbie (aka Newb) - A term used to describe new players.

N00b - A term used to describe a very bad player; not to be confused with Newbie.

NPC - Non Player Character, or a character controlled by the computer.

PC - Player Character, or a character controlled by a person.

PK - Player Killer.

PST - Please Send Tell. Usually said when a player wishes someone to IM them in-game.

PvP - Player vs. Player. When one Player fights another.

Res - Resurrect.

Re-Spawn - Happens when a monster is created, thus replacing the ones killed previously in-game. It is sometimes also used to describe a Player being resurrected.

Tank - A melee character whose main job is to take damage on the front lines.

Train - A term used to describe whenever an irate or mean Player aggros a monster in order to lead it towards another player. This is considered bad behavior.

XP - Experience Points.
